Forty Dutch international civil servants have successfully completed the ‘International Relations and Diplomatic Skills’ training programme at the Clingendael Institute as part of their two-year training trajectory at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in international policy positions at other Dutch Ministries. The seven-week training at Clingendael Academy equipped the junior diplomats with knowledge of international affairs and strengthened their know-how and practical skills needed to work in diplomacy. They simulated negotiations, drafted EU-lobby strategies, discussed policy with experts, visited an online souk and designed digital trade missions, amongst many other invaluable skills, with the aim to prepare them for their careers.

The training was concluded with an online European Council meeting simulation lasting two days, consisting of eighteen delegations, two chairs of the European Commission and of the European Council. The chairs of the European Council were invited to lead the simulation from the Clingendael Institute. With five minutes left on the clock before closing, the negotiated agreement was met with applause. The simulation marked a fitting end to the intensive training programme.

The Clingendael Institute wishes the participants all the best as they enter their new position and is looking forward to welcoming them again in a few months’ time to continue their training.
