Nine participants with diverse professional backgrounds came together physically at the Clingendael Institute to attend the first 2022 edition of the two-day open registration Training on Intercultural Communication. These professionals work in different international environments where they, for example, manage intercultural teams, negotiate and communicate with people from diverse backgrounds, take seat in multilateral working groups or do business across borders.

The training provided them with the right knowledge and skills to become more successful in their work. The group engaged actively in the discussions and exercises, which benefited the training greatly. We look back on a successful first 2022 edition of this training.

Interactive training approach

The programme of the training was set-up according to the five areas of the PACIS Model of Intercultural Capacity. At the Clingendael Academy, we believe that intercultural communication is not only about increasing awareness and knowledge on intercultural differences. That is why the training also entailed the development of necessary skills to navigate across different cultural contexts.

Throughout the training a safe learning environment was fostered. We encouraged participants to critically reflect on their own cultural lens and to put the newly acquired knowledge to practice in a variety of exercises, such as:

  • A self-assessment;
  • An intercultural negotiation simulation;
  • Bilateral role plays;
  • And a reflection exercise.

Fully online training course in June

The upcoming edition will be fully online, catered to participants who have difficulty in travelling to the Netherlands, or for those who simply prefer to take courses from the comfort of their own homes. The programme is set to take place on June 8, 9 and 10, and consists of three half course days, and one half day of self-study. The content of the programme is structured following the PACIS Model and includes many interactive exercises. The Clingendael Academy organises hundreds of online training programmes on a yearly basis. All our online trainings are characterised by a high level of interaction and a variety of training methods.
